The Home Assistant community has reached another significant milestone: the official hardware for Home Assistant’s open-source voice assistant is now available. This makes the vision of a completely independent, locally operated smart home voice assistant that does not rely on cloud services and focuses on data protection a reality.
What is Home Assistant Voice?
Home Assistant Voice is an extension of the popular open source smart home system Home Assistant. The aim is to give users the ability to control their smart home devices using voice commands – without having to rely on external providers such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The highlight: all voice processing takes place locally so that no data is sent to external servers. This makes the service particularly attractive for privacy-conscious users. The Nabu Casa Cloud also supports a cloud service that performs better than the competition in terms of data protection.
The new hardware

The hardware now available is specially optimized for integration with Home Assistant. The device has:
- High-quality microphones: For precise speech recognition even in noisy environments.
- Integrated speakers: To be able to output answers directly.
- Modular design: The hardware is designed in such a way that it can be easily expanded and adapted to individual requirements.
- Connectivity: Seamless integration into the existing Home Assistant system via WLAN or Ethernet.
- Offline functionality: The hardware can also be operated completely offline, further increasing security and privacy.
Functions and options
The hardware was developed to use the full range of Home Assistant Voice functions. This includes:
- Local voice control: Operate your smart home devices such as lights, thermostats or blinds by voice command.
- Multilingualism: Home Assistant Voice already supports several languages, including English, German, French and Dutch. The community is actively working on adding more languages.
- Personalization: Users can define their own commands and reactions to adapt the control system to their individual requirements.
- Data protection: All data remains locally on your device so that no sensitive information is passed on to third-party providers.
- Advanced automations: Integration with Home Assistant allows complex automations that can be triggered by voice commands.
The “Voice Preview Edition”

The hardware that has now been released is known as the “Voice Preview Edition”. It is primarily aimed at enthusiasts and developers who want to test and further develop the voice assistant at an early stage. The aim is to use feedback from the community to further improve the product and optimize it for the mass market in the long term.
This edition already provides a stable basis, but functions and language models can be expanded in the future. Users also have the option of creating their own language models and intents and integrating them into the system.
Availability and price
The hardware is now available for pre-order via the official retailer. The price is €69.99 / $59,99. This is an affordable solution compared to commercial voice assistants, which often come with hidden costs due to cloud subscriptions or data protection risks.
